It’s time for a major change in my life. I got a new job and I will be relocating to the Pacific Northwest, specifically to Portland, OR. I’ve never lived anywhere but in Florida, so this is going to be a lot different for me.
The climate is going to be different in Portland than it is in Florida. It’s a lot cooler in Oregon, and I’ll finally get to see a real winter. Florida doesn’t have snow, and I’m actually looking forward to seeing it for a change.
The people are probably going to be different, too. The part of Florida I lived in had a lot of snowbirds and retirees, so it is mostly older people. There aren’t many young professionals like me around.
That makes it hard to find friends and especially to find dates. I did okay finding friends as a kid, but now as an adult I’m finding the lack of twenty-somethings to be a real problem. Portland has a much more diverse population with regards to age, so I shouldn’t have as much of a problem.
I just hope it doesn’t turn out to be too expensive. This new job has a starting salary a lot higher than what I’m used to in my field, but I also know that the cost of living in Portland is higher than in small-town Florida.
That’s the thing about moving cross-country: I’m leaving my support system behind. If I run into trouble, I’m on my own, at least until I make some new friends and get settled in.
But that’s part of the adventure! I think everything is going to work out just fine. I’m really looking forward to this move. I really believe I am changing my life for the better by moving to Portland.
